Former CPD Vice Officer Indicted for Murder

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A Franklin County grand jury has returned charges of murder and voluntary manslaughter against former Vice Officer Andrew Mitchell, in the shooting death of Donna Castleberry.

Mitchell was working undercover, investigating prostitution complaints in the Franklinton area in August 2018, when he got into an altercation with Castleberry in his unmarked car.

Mitchell was stabbed in the hand, and Castleberry was shot dead.

Prosecutor Ron O'Brien says he has never had an on-duty police officer indicted for murder in an on-duty incident.

Mitchell is already facing federal charges for allegedly holding women against their will, and forcing them to have sex with him, in exchange for their release.

Mitchell submitted his retirement earlier this year. His situation was just one of many stories which prompted the shutdown of the CPD's entire Vice Unit.
