Contractor Dies in Trench Collapse in Union County

MARYSVILLE, Ohio (24-7 News)--A contractor is dead after being trapped when the trench he was working in collapsed.

The man was working on a water line Monday in the Marysville area, in a trench six-feet below the ground, when it caved in on him around 12:30 p.m.

It took several hours for first responders to remove the dirt and retrieve the man's body due to the muddy conditions of the soil.

The man was later identified as 34-year-old Christopher McDonald of Nashport.

The Marysville Fire Chief tells ABC-6 that usually, steel trench boxes are set up to prevent collapses, but that was not the case here.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating.
