Ohio House Bans Those with "Serious Mental Illness" from Execution

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio House of Representatives has approved a bill that would ban those with "serious mental illness" from being executed.

The bill received bipartisan support on its passage, as well as support from mental health advocacy groups. It would classify diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, or delusional disorder as "serious mental illness".

As for inmates currently on death row, they can apply for re-sentencing if they were found to have serious mental illnes at the time of their crimes.

The measure now goes to the Ohio Senate.
