Columbus City Council Approves Future Plans for Mapfre Stadium

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Columbus City Council has approved the plan to turn Mapfre Stadium into a community sports park, once Columbus Crew SC moves into their new downtown stadium.

The city will contribute $50-million to the project, which will convert the facility on the Ohio State Fairgrounds into more sports fields, a community center, and the new training facility for Columbus crew SC.

Plans are still in the works to construct the new Crew SC stadium in the Arena District, near the confluence of the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers. The stadium could open as early as mid-2021.

Supporters of the plan are hopeful of the economic opportunities of the plan, while opponents say they don't want tax dollars used to build a new facility.
