Five Rides Shut Down at The Ohio State Fair

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ride inspectors are taking safety at this year's Ohio State fair seriously, with five rides closed on Thursday, and one of those not operating for the rest of the fair.

Dorothy Pelanda, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, says the ride "Kissell's Military Base" was found with visible corrosion, and was disassembled overnight Thursday.

She adds that the ride only arrived at the state fairgrounds on Tuesday, and was actually able to operate in Kentucky, which it just came from.

The other four rides were closed, while inspectors await further paperwork or routine welding repairs, before another inspection is done.

All of the safety protocols follow the accident involving the "Fire Ball" ride at the fair back in 2017, which eventually killed two people.

The fair also has a new ride operator this year, in Talley Amusements, out of Texas.

Pelanda says Ohio now has some of the toughest ride inspection standards in the country, with her agency overseeing inspections and safety on all traveling amusement rides, amusement park rides, and water park rides.
