Triathlon Participant Struck and Killed in Delaware County

DELAWARE, Ohio (WTVN)--A woman participating in the Ironman Triathlon was struck and killed while riding her bicycle in Delaware County Sunday morning.

The State Highway Patrol says 44-year-old Kristen Oswald of Pennsylvania was hit by a semi-truck along US 23, near Troutman Road, around 9AM.

Oswald was pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a helmet at the time.

She was participating in the triathlon, with a safety zone set up along one lane of US 23 for bicyclists to ride. Troopers say Oswald was riding outside of that safety zone when she was struck.

Early indications are that the driver of the semi, who is from Canada, was not at fault. Alcohol or drugs also do not appear to be factors.
