DeWine Announces New State Agency for School Safety

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has created a new state agency to focus on school safety, and preventing violence, by actively tracking down school threats.

DeWine signed an executive order Wednesday creating the Ohio School Safety Center, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, which will have seven full-time staffers to start, to improve school safety, beginning tomorrow.

The center will provide schools with resources to improve safety, and look at school safety plans, which may need to be updated.

DeWine says the center will also have advanced tools to search social media to look for possible threats, and will be able to quickly notify local school staff and law enforcement.

DeWine says the center is part of his plan for overall safety and preventing violence, following the mass shooting in Dayton on August 4th, that killed nine people, and injured 26 others.
