Mirror Lake Drained, Ahead of "The Game"

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--In an effort to try and quell what was considered a tradition, The Ohio State University has drained Mirror Lake.

University Police say it is out of an abundance of caution, and with the university's focus on safety top of mind.

The lake will be refilled at a later date.

The University and Undergraduate Student Government took steps to end the "Mirror Lake Jump", with students jumping in during the week of the game against "that team up north".

Reports of injuries, and even a student's death in 2015, led to the action taken to end the tradition.

The university then renovated the lake and surrounding area to allow the lake to be drained.

Police remind students and residents that entering the empty lake basin is considered criminal trespassing.
