Reports of CFD Impersonator Incorrect

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--What was originally reported as a person impersonating a Columbus Firefighter, in an effort to enter city homes, was incorrect.

Columbus fire Battallion Chief Steve Martin says the man in the report was an actual member of the department, on official business.

Martin said the department learned the firefighter was installing smoke detectors in a neighborhood when he began knocking on nearby homes to offer installation to other homeowners.

Officials say the confusion stemmed from a deviation in CFD procedure, which is to install detectors by appointment made through the city's smoke alarm hotline.
