Teenage Murder Suspect Dies in Officer-Involved Shooting

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A teenager wanted for murder was shot dead in a confrontation with Columbus Police Officers.

SWAT team members closed in on 17-year-old Joseph Jewell at a hotel along East Dublin-Granville Road Thursday afternoon. When officers arrived at his room, Jewell opened fire, and the officers returned fire.

Jewell was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The officers involved were not hurt, and are now on administrative leave, pending an investigation, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

Jewell was wanted for the shooting death of 17-year-old Enrique Forney Jr. at the Mallard's Landing Apartments late Tuesday night.

Forney's death was Columbus's 18th homicide of 2020, and officers say that number is already too high.
