Major Cuts on the Way for OSU Athletic Department

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The coronavirus pandemic has had a major impact on the Ohio State University Department of Athletics, with major cuts on the way.

OSU Athletics Director Gene Smith released details of the plan Wednesday to mitigate a projected $107-million budget shortfall for the 2021 fiscal year. The report was obtained by ABC-6.

It includes furloughs ranging from 5 to 60 days for nearly 350 staffers, 47 staff members taking a voluntary 5% pay reduction, and 25 full-time athletics positions being eliminated.

Smith says all of the cuts are being made while maintaining all 36 varsity sports at the university.

Smith says student-athletes will continue to have support services and grant-in-aid programs available.

With the postponement of football for the 2020 season, the athletic department lost it's biggest source of revenue.
