COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Investigators say the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was initiated with some of the suspects meeting in central Ohio.

The FBI says the suspects met in Ohio at least twice, once in Dublin in June and again somewhere else in Ohio in July, with the plot initially to target Whitmer's vacation home.

The plan stemmed from the state's strict rules regarding the coronavirus, that Whitmer put in place earlier this year. 13 people in all were arrested.

Their plan also included an attack on the Michigan Statehouse in Lansing. Authorities moved in when the suspects met this week to purchase explosives and tactical gear.

Whitmer told CNN on Thursday that she had knowledge of the plot for weeks.
