CLEVELAND, Ohio (WTVN)--A report from the New York Times, confirmed by ESPN, says the Cleveland Indians will change the team name.

The team earlier this year announced they would explore the possibility of a name change, after years of protests by Native American groups, and supporters of those groups, saying the name "Indians" is offensive.

The team also dropped the "Chief Wahoo" logo before hosting the 2019 major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The report about the name change says an announcement could happen as soon as this week, but there's no word on what the new team name could be.

Earlier this year, the Washington Football Team dropped it's nickname that was deemed offensive.
