COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio Secretary of State has issued a directive regarding the use of ballot drop boxes by counties across the state.

Frank LaRose says counties can only use one official drop box for absentee ballots. It takes effect for the 2021 primary election in Ohio, which is scheduled for May 4th.

A similar order was issued for the 2020 general election last November, sparking criticism from voting rights advocates. They argued that it discriminated against voters living in more densely-populated urban counties, which lean democratic.

The order even prompted a legal challenge last year, with the Secretary of State winning that battle.
