WASHINGTON, DC (WTVN)--US Representative Joyce Beatty was detained by US Capitol Police on Thursday, for an illegal demonstration in the Hart Senate Office Building.

The central Ohio congresswoman was part of a demonstration for voting rights, with protesters also calling for an end to the Senate filibuster.

The marchers arrived in the atrium of the office building Thursday afternoon, and were told by police 3 times to disperse. That's when Beatty was led away in zip ties.

Beatty later released a statement on twitter that reads, “I stand in solidarity with Black women and allies across the country in defense of our constitutional right to vote. We have come too far and fought too hard to see everything systematically dismantled and restricted by those who wish to silence us. Be assured that this is just the beginning. This is Our Power, Our Message."

Beatty is no stranger to protests. She was pepper sprayed during demonstrations in downtown Columbus in May of 2020.
