COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Columbus City Council has approved additional penalties for those who recklessly operate ATVs and dirt bikes on city streets.

The moves is in response to hundreds of complaints from residents this year on the activity, with most of it occurring downtown and in the Short North.

Offenders are subject to a fine of up to $1,000, and can have their vehicles confiscated.

Council says they will see if the new penalties curb the activity, and will reevaluate if needed.

On Monday, City Council also approved the new Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area for the Arena District, which will run along Nationwide Boulevard, between Lower.com Field and Nationwide Arena. The DORA allows patrons to take an alcoholic beverage from a local bar or restaurant onto the street.
