COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Franklin County's two major health departments are asking all school districts in the county to require universal mask-wearing in buildings when school starts this fall.

The request comes from Columbus Public Health and Franklin County Public Health, and cites a significant portion of the student population not eligible for the coronavirus vaccine, and about half of the community vaccinated from coronavirus.

Health officials say the policy should apply to all students, teachers, and staff, regardless of vaccination status.

They continue to urge all eligible individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.

The Columbus City School district had previously set a policy of all students, teachers, and staff wearing masks in buildings, and on school buses, regardless of vaccination status.
