COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio State Athletics Director Gene Smith announced on Wednesday that he will retire from the position.

In a previously-scheduled press conference, Smith says he will step down at the end of the 2024 academic year.

He started in the position in 2005, overseeing the nation's largest collegiate athletics program. Ohio State has 36 varsity sports.

Under Smith's time at Ohio State, the university has conducted multiple renovations and updates to Ohio Stadium, the construction and opening of the Covelli Center, and the university's involvement in NIL deals for student-athletes.
