Notre Dame burns

Notre Dame Cathedral was extensively damaged when a fire broke out at the historic Paris landmark yesterday evening (April 15th), raging for several hours before firefighters were able to extinguish it. The spire of the 12th-century Roman Catholic cathedral collapsed during the blaze and two-thirds of the roof was destroyed, but Paris' fire chief said the structure had been saved.Mayor Anne Hidalgo said that a significant collection of art and holy objects had been safely removed from the cathedral, including the crown of thorns, a Catholic relic. Officials said that the fire, which began while Notre Dame was undergoing renovations, is being treated as an accident, with arson and possible terrorism ruled out, at least for now. The blaze broke out after visiting hours at the leading tourist site had ended, and no one was killed, with just one firefighter injured. French President Emmanuel Macron pledged that the cathedral would be rebuilt, and that he'd launch a national funding campaign."
