Tom Brady a Buc

After NFL legend Tom Brady rocked the football world last week by announcing he was leaving the Patriots and later signing with the Buccaneers, speculation grew about potentially ulterior reasons for his big move. "To many of the executives who did due diligence [on Brady ahead of free agency], Brady seemed so driven by an animus toward Belichick that they couldn't tell if he actually wanted a fresh start or if he just needed leverage to force Kraft to step in," says ESPN's Seth Wickersham.

According to another source at ESPN, a meeting between Belichick and Brady resulted in a "blowup". Last August before Brady and the Patriots extended his contract and raised his salary in 2019, the agreement would also make him free at the end of 2019. Wickersham also wrote that, "[Brady] wanted what everyone wants from an emplyer: to feel valued and to love work," continuing, "They seemed like two reasonable asks - until Brady realized that in New England, under Bill Belichick, he might be asking the impossible."
